In the fall of 2019, I was excited to meet the teachers from The Columbus School and have lunch with them when they came to visit classrooms in my school. As soon as I heard that there was an opportunity to travel to Colombia and see their school, I jumped at the chance. I love to travel and explore new places, but I've only been in the US and some countries in Europe so far, so this will be my first time visiting South America.
I studied Spanish at Nazareth College in Rochester before getting my master's and teaching certification in early childhood and bilingual education at the University at Buffalo. After graduation, I was hired for the position where I have now been for eight years, as a second grade dual language teacher in Buffalo Public Schools. These days, it's rare to be able to stay in the same position for long, so I know I'm very lucky. I'm looking forward to observing native language instruction in a Spanish speaking country, and hopefully being able to bring some strategies or tools back to my own classroom to support my NLA lessons. I'm also interested in seeing how teachers in different schools support social/emotional learning and building classroom community, as these are important elements of childhood development that I am always working to fit into a busy school day. My students have seen a few videos from The Columbus School and they're excited for me to come back and tell them how different everything is! I'm also excited to learn more about Colombian culture in general, because I don't know much about the country. ¡Vámonos!
